Elvis at the World's Fair — Adventure, Romance & Rock 'n' Roll in Seattle

Set against the dazzling backdrop of the 1962 Seattle World's Fair, It Happened at the World's Fair is one of Elvis Presley's most visually spectacular films — and one of his most purely enjoyable. The Space Needle, the monorail, the futuristic pavilions: it's a time capsule of mid-century American optimism, and Elvis fits right in.

He plays Mike Edwards, a carefree crop-duster pilot whose plane gets seized to cover a gambling debt run up by his partner Danny (Gary Lockwood). With no plane and no plan, Mike finds himself wandering the fairgrounds — where he meets a charming nurse played by Joan O'Brien, and ends up looking after a young girl whose uncle has gone missing. What starts as bad luck turns into romance, adventure, and more than a few great songs.

The film features a warm, melodic soundtrack perfectly suited to its setting, including One Broken Heart for Sale and They Remind Me Too Much of You. And keep an eye out for a young Kurt Russell in one of his earliest screen appearances — as the kid who kicks Elvis in the shin.
