Elvis Country Legacy Edition 2-CD Set
[+] enlarge image

Elvis Country, originally released in January 1971, received critical acclaim upon release. In a review for Rolling Stone, historian Peter Guralnick said; "... Elvis Presley has come out with a record which gives us some of the very finest and most affecting music since he first recorded for Sun almost 17 years ago." But it's the singing, the passion and engagement most of all which mark this album as something truly exceptional. All the familiar virtues are there. The intensity. That peculiar combination of hypertension and soul. There is even a frenzied recollection of what the rock era once was, as Elvis takes on Jerry Lee Lewis' masterful "Whole Lotta Shakin'" and comes out relatively unscathed. In short - he has never sung better.

This Legacy Edition of Elvis Country is coupled with Elvis' follow-up studio album from June 1971, Love Letters From Elvis which contains songs recorded at the Elvis Country sessions including; "The Sound Of Your Cry" and "Life" (Billboard #53).

Elvis Presley: 3000 South Paradise Road FTD CD
This 7" 2-disc release with a 16-page booklet takes a closer look at Elvis' engagement at the Las Vegas Hilton in August, 1972. The first disc is a soundboard recording from the dinner show on August 12, while the second disc features rehearsals from August 4th, 6 hours before the opening night of the engagement. The audio on disc 2 was recorded on a personal tape recorder so the sound quality is below standard, but historical significance more than compensates for its quality. As with "48 HOURS TO MEMPHIS", this release has been prepared by Robert Frieser and Hans Slebos, who once again has done a fabulous job of collecting information and materials for the project. There will be additional information in the next few weeks. "3000 South Paradise Road" provides a unique experience of Elvis rehearsing, 6 hours before the opening night at the Las Vegas Hilton on August 4, 1972. As disc 2 is captured on a personal tape recorder, the sonic quality is below standards, but historical significance more than compensates for its audio limitations. Disc 1 is a soundboard recording.

Elvis Presley: Legacy Edition 2 CD Set
The recorded legacy of Elvis Presley continues to be discovered by new generations that never saw him or heard him perform live. It's hard to appreciate that he started so much of what we take for granted now in popular music. Until 1956, the teenagers of suburban America, and the rest of the world, had to endure ditties by Rosemary Clooney and Perry Como but everything was about to be tossed upside down. On January 28 on a cold night in New York, Elvis took America by storm as he appeared on CBS-TV's Stage Show hosted by Jimmy and Tommy Dorsey. On February 4 for his second appearance he sang a song that literally changed the world of popular music "Heartbreak Hotel". Its unique sound and style literally blew everything before it away while at the same time inducing the blueprint for everything that was to come; by April, it would be #1 on Billboard. This incredible step-change in musical history resonated around the world and while liberating millions of young adolescent teenagers it also inspired many successful artists of today to pick a guitar or sing - everyone wanted to be like Elvis. The pure spontaneity of these seminal recordings shows through even today; "Heartbreak Hotel", Don't Be Cruel", "Hound Dog", "Blue Suede Shoes" and "My Baby Left Me" are some of the greatest rock 'n' roll records ever made. Elvis' unprecedented level of achievement is still the benchmark by which artistic success is measured today and YOUNG MAN WITH THE BIG BEAT is testament to the phenomenon and cultural icon that is Elvis Presley.

Elvis is Back! Legacy Edition 2-CD Set
It is argued by many that Elvis Is Back is possibly the best album Elvis ever recorded. During his two years in the army, Elvis had spent what spare time he had expanding his vocal range and improving his technique. Combined with a challenging and diverse repertoire, a new band of Nashville session aces, and improved three-track recording technology, it was an almost completely new Elvis who emerged in April of 1960. Recorded over just two nights, the sessions produced not only the twelve album tracks, but also six tracks for single release, including three #1 singles: all-time classics "Its Now Or Never," "Are You Lonesome Tonight?" and "Stuck On You." While the follow-up album Something For Everybody has not historically received the same reverence, Elvis' voice on that LP may have been even better than it was the year before - possibly the best of his career. These recordings burst with an impact that is immediate - no surprise, considering the album was recorded in only one night. The bonus singles, which include the #1 hits "(Marie's The Name) His Latest Flame" and "Good Luck Charm" as well as the classic "Little Sister," were also cut in just two additional sessions. In the mold of recent 2-CD Legacy Editions of the classic albums From Elvis In Memphis and On Stage, Elvis Is Back (Legacy Edition) is the definitive version of one of Elvis' most essential albums, expanded to include another historically significant album from the time period and the hit singles associated with both albums.

Elvis Promised Land FTD CD
In 1973, Elvis booked sessions at Memphis' famous Stax Studios, where Booker T. & the MGs, Otis Redding, and numerous other soul stars had recorded hits. Unfortunately, initial efforts to have Elvis work with the Stax stable of musicians yielded few usable tracks, and Elvis soon called in his stage band to finish the sessions. The results can be heard on the albums Good Times, Raised On Rock, and Promised Land. Like most of Elvis' 70s recordings, Promised Land is an eclectic mix reflecting Elvis' many musical enthusiasms. The ten songs that make up this album run the gamut from country heartbreak songs ('There's a Honky Tonk Angel', 'Mr. Songman') to carnal white funk ('If You Talk in Your Sleep') to heartfelt gospel ('Help Me') to schmaltzy pop ('Love Song of the Year', 'It's Midnight'). While the performances on Promised Land are uniformly excellent, the material is a mixed bag of strong material and throwaways.
